We are Easter People, and this is our season. The season of Resurrection. The Fifty Days of Easter continue, and Pentecost fast approaches. In Luke’s telling of the Resurrection, the women who went to the tomb were greeted by two men in gleaming white clothing. “’Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen!” (Luke 24:5b-6)
Each Spring, I am reminded of the Resurrection by the new life that springs up around us. Grass that has been dormant turns green. Leaves bud on trees that seemed dead just a few weeks ago. Flowers bloom … and my allergies take on new life as well!
But this is also a time to celebrate all that God is doing at Calvary. This Easter season has been so full of life! Our Cantata, What Love is This, ministered to over 250 people. Throughout Holy Week, we celebrated Dinner with the Disciples with nearly 100 people, many of them guests, who enjoyed a meal and inspiring words from seven followers of Christ, portrayed by members of Calvary. Nearly 90 people participated in our Holy Thursday Service, in which we remembered the Last Supper, and the Passion of our Lord. Our Resurrection Celebration on Easter Sunday Morning had 293 in attendance — 78 more than in 2017! Among those were 105 identified non-member guests. What a wonderful day as our sanctuary was filled with people lifting their voices in celebration of our Risen Savior.
Our celebration will continue as we observe Pentecost on May 20. Be sure to wear something red as part of our celebration of Pentecost and arrival of the promised Holy Spirit. The Spirit comes to help in many ways: creating, adopting, inspiring, and guiding. The Holy Spirit’s presence is obvious and noisy: the earth trembles, the wind howls, and the truth is proclaimed. The Spirit comes to help. If we pay attention, we will receive the help and messages needed; for the Holy Spirit comes not just at Pentecost, but anytime we are in need.
Christ is Risen! Christ is Risen, Indeed! Alleluia!
Come, Holy Spirit, Come. We are ready and waiting for your presence and power, your gifts and your guidance. Come, Holy Spirit, Come. Amen.
